RUSSIAN RIVER SCHEDULES ONLINE SALE OF PLINY THE YOUNGER 2021 FOR JAN. 28, CANCELS IN-PERSON RELEASES AT BREWERY

There will be less of it and it will not be sold to fans in person, but Russian River Brewing Co.’s most famous creation will be going on sale at the end of the month.

That beer is Pliny the Younger 2021, a 10.25 percent ABV triple IPA brewed with Amarillo, Chinook, Citra, CTZ, Elixir, Mosaic, Nelson, Simcoe, and Warrior hops. While Russian River was hoping to hold events to sell the beer in person, all in-person releases have been canceled and the entirety of the bottles that are being filled will be sold online.

“We have had to make some hard decisions based on many factors, first and foremost being the health and safety of not only our employees and customers but also the community in which we live,” reads a post on Russian River’s website. “Our business operations are also dependent upon both state and local health orders which can change, and likely will continue to change, at any time. Therefore, there will be no in-person release at either brewery this year.  While we are sad to miss seeing our loyal friends and fans from around the world, it has become clear that it will not be safe for us to gather again by February.”

However, some fans in the state of California will still be able to buy the famous IPA, as Russian River plans to sell a limited number of bottles on its website starting on Jan. 28. The 510ml bottles that debuted last year will be returning, but they will only be sold packaged in a “non-customizable 12-bottle mixed case” priced around $100 that will include four bottles of Pliny the Younger as well as one to two each of “a few other favorite RRBC beers.”

According to Russian River, there will be around 6,000 samplers that will only be shipped within the state of California due to “cost, compliance and legal reasons” starting approximately one-two week after the online sale. In addition, bottles will not be sold at the brewery or any retail partner.

The Santa Rosa, Calif.-based brewery also produces another beer named Pliny the Elder, an 8 percent ABV double IPA brewed with Amarillo, Centennial, CTZ, and Simcoe hops.
