Last Snow… Last Snow… Last Snow…
Living in Virginia, that is all I have heard for the last month, will this be the last snow we get? It just keeps coming and coming so it was quite ironic that the beer scheduled for me this week was Funky Buddha’s Last Snow.
Just recently laying its footprint in Virginia, Funky Buddha has given us all a change with some fresh, new beers to try and savor, right out of Florida. A fairly well-regarded beer, Last Snow is a coconut coffee porter that is part of the brewery’s Small Batch Series and is released in September and February of each year.
Poured from a 12-ounce bottle, the color is a deep brown—as a porter should be—with a small sized tan head and almost non-existent lacing. The aroma is dominated by toasted coconut, sweet malts with a bit of cold-brewed coffee at the very end of the nose.
The flavor is almost overwhelmingly too sweet and is full of more coconut, a touch of semi-sweet chocolate and once again, the coffee taking the back seat. The balance is quite nice, but the lactose feel is a little too much throughout the process and does not allow any bitterness to come through. Mouthfeel is lightly chewy and coats the tongue with a cooling effect. Coffee becomes more of a player as the beer warms but just doesn’t quite get to where it needs to be to bring forth the perfect balance. While this is very drinkable, I feel that a touch of aging may mellow the sugars and cause a more pronounced porter feel.
