Some of the most legendary Belgium Trappist beers in the world is now available to be purchased online, but you will still have travel to Belgium to pick it up.
Westvleteren Blond, Westvleteren 8 and Westvleteren 12 are produced by Brouwerij Westvleteren in the Trappist Abbey of St. Sixtus located in Vleteren, Belgium. While the blonde, dubbel and quadruple-style ales have been sold at the abbey since 1940, until now the only way that consumers could get the famous beer without paying a significant markup via the secondary market was to call a special phone number and schedule an appointment to pick up the beer at the abbey.
That has changed with the announcement that all three beers can now be ordered through the abbey’s website, with each purchaser limited to two 24-count cases of 330ml bottles. However, the web store will only be open during certain times that can be found on a calendar on the website here.
- Trappist Westvleteren Blond (5.8 percent ABV) — €35.00 ($39.15)
- Trappist Westvleteren 8 (8 percent ABV) — €40.00 ($44.75)
- Trappist Westvleteren 12 (10.2 percent ABV) — €45.00 ($50.35)
Westvleteren 12 was officially sold in the U.S. once before in 2012, when gift packs containing six 330ml bottles of the beer and two tasting glasses priced at $85 each were shipped to retailers, the sales of which funded some much-needed renovations at the abbey. That release was limited to just 15,000 gift packs with distribution handled by Massachusetts-based Shelton Brothers.
