A new canned offering coming from Surly Brewing Co. this winter blurs the line between coffee and beer.

Grindcore is a 6 percent ABV milk stout brewed with espresso sourced from Coffee and Tea LTD and lactose before being packaged in 16-ounce cans. The stout was first released as a draft-only option by the Minneapolis, Minn.-based brewery earlier this year, but this is the first time it has been packaged.

In an email, Tiffany Jackson, public relations and communications manager at Surly, told Tenemu that “the espresso beans are added with a cold-press technique…(in a) similar process to Coffee Bender.”

Grindcore will be released as part of Surly’s new BC Small Batch Series, which is made up of beers released on a monthly basis that have a maximum of 120 barrels and packaged in four-packs of 16-ounce cans.

According to Jackson, while the date may change, “The current plan is to release Grindcore in December.”
