While Stone Brewing Co. has so far resisted canning beers in the U.S., Europe is apparently another matter.
In a post on its website, the Escondido, Calif.-based company indicates that the new Stone Berlin will be canning four of the brewery’s most popular beers: Cali-Belgique IPA (6.9 percent ABV), Stone IPA (6.9 percent ABV), Arrogant Bastard Ale (7.2 percent ABV) and Ruination Double IPA (8.5 percent ABV). Cali-Belgique IPA, Stone IPA and Ruination Double IPA will be package in 12-ounce cans while Arrogant Bastard Ale will be sold in 16-ounce cans.
In addition, Stone will be canning Stone Xocoveza for the Holidays & the New Year (8.1 percent ABV) as a seasonal that will be available from mid-October through mid-January 2017.
“For a company like Stone distributing all across Europe and beyond, studies have shown that the additional trucking, storage, energy consumption for machinery and hot water, and the high use of cleaning chemicals is inefficient and an environmental negative,” said Greg Koch, Stone co-founder and ceo, in a statement on the brewery’s website. “By using cans for our Berlin-brewed beers, we’ll be able to transport our beer using less fuel and in the most recycled package.”
In 2014, Stone announced it would be spending an estimated $25 million to open a brewery in the city of Berlin, Germany. In addition to the brewhouse, the two-acre location will include a packaging and distribution center, a Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens restaurant and a Stone Company Store.
According to a post on Stone’s website, all four new cans will be distributed exclusively throughout Europe and are scheduled to start shipping in June.
While Stone has not announced any plans to sell canned beers in the U.S., it has filed for label approval of cans.
