An odd-numbered year means a brand new variant of Stone Brewing Co.’s Imperial Russian Stout is now shipping across the country.

This year’s variant is Espresso Totalitarian Imperial Russian Stout, a 10.6 percent ABV stout brewed with “hundreds of pounds” of espresso beans. The base beer is the Escondido, Calif.-based brewery’s Totalitarian Imperial Russian Stout, a 10.6 percent ABV beer brewed with Belma and Magnum hops as well as flaked oats that debuted last year.

Since 2011, odd-numbered years have featured new variations of Stone’s base Imperial Russian Stout released in tandem with the classic version, including 2015’s release of Chai-Spiced Russian Imperial Stout, 2013’s Espresso Russian Imperial Stout and 2011’s Belgo Anise Russian Imperial Stout. A variant was not released in 2017.

According to Stone, Espresso Totalitarian Imperial Russian Stout is packaged in both six-packs of 12-ounce cans as well as 22-ounce bottles that were released at all of the brewery’s locations yesterday. In addition, bottles and cans are currently shipping to retailers nationwide.
