Another of Stone Brewing Co.’s iconic beers is getting the barrel treatment.

The Escondido, Calif.-based brewery will be releasing Double Bastard in the Rye, a 14 percent ABV ale that has been aged in Templeton Rye whiskey barrels. According to a beer label filed with the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB), the new beer is ” a close relative of Southern Charred.”

“Much like the lacerative mother of a beer that is Double Bastard Ale, rye whiskey is not for everyone,” reads the label. “Not remotely. Most are not emotionally or otherwise equipped to appreciate its unbridled intensity. So to sequester Double Bastard Ale in rye whiskey barrels is to conceive an experience that no doubt will be treasured by only a select few.”

Stone’s Double Bastard Ale (11 percent ABV) was first introduced in 1998. In 2014, the brewery released a version of its Arrogant Bastard Ale aged in bourbon barrels that was only available in Stone’s Arrogant Bastard Box.

According to the beer label, Double Bastard in the Rye will be packaged in 500ml bottles. An email sent to the brewery for additional details was not immediately returned.
