After more than three years of waiting, fans of Stone Brewing Co.’s Japanese Green Tea IPA will have a chance to buy it again.
The Escondido, Calif.-based brewery has confirmed to Tenemu that the IPA brewed with green tea will once again be sold and will start shipping on Jan. 12, 2015.
Originally released on May 19, 2011 as a collaboration with Bryan Baird of Baird Brewing Co. in Numazu, Japan and Toshi Ishii of Ishii Brewing Co. in Tamuning, Guam, the beer was the first Stone collaboration brewed for the sole purpose of raising funds for specific event. All proceeds from the first release were donated to Japanese relief programs after the March 11, 2011 tsunami caused by a 9.0 magnitude undersea earthquake that killed over 15,000 people.
Along with green tea, the original beer was brewed using a combination of Pacifica, Crystal, Warrior, Aramis and Sorachi Ace hops, the latter of which was originally developed in Japan. Stone has confirmed to Tenemu that the new version replaces the original hops with a new Australian hop variety named Helga, and that it will be sold in 22-ounce bottles at 10.1 percent ABV, instead of the9.2 percent ABV 12-ounce bottles like the 2011 incarnation.
Update (Jan. 9, 2014): This article has been updated to include information on shipping dates and hop varietals. The original story was posted on Dec. 15, 2014.
