Last November Southern Tier Brewing Co. of Lakewood, N.Y. formalized its efforts with barrel-aging into a series called Barrel Works with the release of Manhattan Ale. Aged in bourbon barrels, Manhattan Ale clocked in at 13.7 percent ABV and featured cherry juice, orange peel and coriander.

Manhattan Ale will no longer stand alone in the young series. Monstrosus, an imperial stout, also aged in bourbon barrels is heading for bottles in July according to a label submitted to the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB). The beer will be bottled at 22-ounces and features black malt, chocolate malt and roasted barley on the grain bill. The beer then ages “for a year in bourbon barrels.”

The label describes Monstrosus as a “wildly complex and rich creation. It is one that we’re proud to have given life, even if it happens to terrify the townspeople.”

An email sent to Southern Tier seeking further detail was not immediately returned.
