Smuttlabs, the experimental side of Smuttynose Brewing Co, is due to release a sour ale, Flanders Red, per filings with the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) sometime in mid to late 2016.
The Simpsons fans should note that this Flanders Red has nothing to do with Homer’s neighbor, Ned Flanders, but is rather a sour style of beer originating in Flanders, Belgium. The Hampton, N.H. brewery’s take on this ale has been aged for three years in oak barrels along with cherries resulting in a 6 percent ABV sour ale.
The brewery expects 15-18 barrels for this batch. Out of that, there will be 25 cases of 500ml bottles sold at the brewery’s retail store in Hampton, N.H. The remaining beer will go into 1/6th bbl kegs to rest in its revolutionary Beer Vault for future tappings. No firm release date as yet, however, a brewery rep stated they would be bottling “soon.”
Update (April 19, 2016) — This article has been updated to include more details based on a brewery responses. It was originally published on April 18.
