A new release from Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. will be a whale of a stout.
The beer is Trip In The Woods Cocoa Coconut Narwhal, an 11.8 percent ABV imperial stout brewed with toasted coconut before being aged in Kentucky bourbon barrels for “nearly a year” with more coconut and cocoa nibs added. The new release uses the Chico, Calif.-based brewery’s Narwhal imperial stout (10.2 percent ABV) as its base, a beer that debuted in 2012.
As the name indicates, Trip In The Woods Cocoa Coconut Narwhal is also part of Sierra Nevada’s Trip In The Woods Series, which is made up of beers aged in various types of barrels and has included releases such as Barrel-Aged Lime Ale (9.3 percent ABV); Scotch Style Ale (9.1 percent ABV), which was aged in bourbon barrels; Ovila Quad (10.3 percent ABV) aged in madeira barrels (11.5 percent ABV) and Barrel-Aged Porter, a 7.4 percent ABV porter that was aged in red wine barrels, among others.
According to a post on Sierra Nevada’s Facebook page, Trip In The Woods Cocoa Coconut Narwhal will be packaged in 750ml bottles and is scheduled to ship to retailers across the brewery’s distribution network in October.
