Pliny the Elder is heading to SoCal.

Due to a much needed equipment swap, Russian River Brewing Co.’s extremely popular double IPA, Pliny the Elder, will be brewed 250 miles down the road at Firestone Walker in Paso Robles, Calif. during the month of February 2015. Russian River co-owners Vinnie and Natalie Cilurzo recently purchased a new kettle from AAA Metal Fabrication in Oregon replacing the 50-barrel kettle and mash tun Russian River has since used since 2008. That equipment was actually acquired from Dogfish Head Brewing in Delaware and as such the Cilurzo’s realized its days were numbered.

According to the company, only draft versions of Pliny the Elder will be affected, as there will be enough existing inventory of Pliny the Elder in the fermentors at Russian River’s brewery in Santa Rosa, Calif. to continue selling bottles at the brewery during the transition. Russian River hopes the upgraded equipment will allow them to better handle the brewery’s growing demand, which currently requires over 14,000 barrels of beer to be produced annually.

Despite the new equipment, the company made it clear it is not increasing production, writing, “Please understand this is not an announcement that we are expanding capacity!”
