First came bourbon barrel-aged, then bourbon barrel-aged with coffee, and now Oskar Blues Brewery has turned to another type of barrel for the latest canned release of two of its most popular beers.

The first of the two new releases is Rum Barrel-Aged Ten Fidy, a 14.2 percent ABV imperial stout aged in for six months in Jamaican rum barrels. Versions of the barrel-aged stout have been released as draft-only options since 2013, but this is the first time the variant has been packaged.

“Years ago we came across a single recently emptied rum barrel,” says the marketing materials from Oskar Blues. “It was incredibly popular with the staff and we’ve been wanting to do it again for a long while. While aging in rum barrels gives less oak and vanilla character than bourbon the smoothness of the molasses and burnt sugar character of the rum rounds out the roast of the Fidy and adds a unique twist to a beer you thought you knew everything about.”

The second new beer to be canned is Rum Barrel-Aged Death By Coconut, a 10.8 percent ABV Irish imperial porter that has been aged for six months in Jamaican rum barrels.  The porter was released as draft-only options earlier this year, but this is the first time this variant has been packaged.

“This was a complete no brainer for a barrel aged beer,” says the marketing materials from Oskar Blues. “Regular DBC takes the pallet to a different place from the typical beer world of malt and hops. When you think of coconut you think tropical when you think tropical you think rum. If that wasn’t decadent enough having a beer that already has Cholaca a drink derived from cacao tops it off. To sum it up we wanted a beer that send your pallet on vacation.”

In September, Oskar Blues announced that it would be distributing 19.2-ounce “stovepipe” cans of Bourbon Barrel-Aged Ten Fidy nationwide starting next month, as well as the first release of Bourbon Java Ten Fidy in 19.2-ounce cans that were sold during launch parties at the Tasty Weasel Taproom in both Colorado and North Carolina on Nov. 5.

According to Chad Melis, marketing director at Oskar Blues, “roughly 20bbls” of both Rum Barrel-Aged Ten Fidy and Rum Barrel-Aged Death By Coconut will be available packaged in 19.2-ounce “stovepipe” cans at both the Tasty Weasel Taproom in Brevard, N.C. and at the Tasty Weasel Taproom in Longmont, Colo. on Dec. 17.

In addition, after Bourbon Java Ten Fidy in 19.2-ounce cans sold out faster than expected due in part to the fact that were no purchase limits, Oskar Blues will be instituting a 12 can per person limit for both Rum Barrel-Aged Ten Fidy and Rum Barrel-Aged Death By Coconut.
