This weekend, Jester King Brewery is releasing a brand new variant of its cherry sour ale aged in very special barrels and packaged in rarely used 330ml bottles.

Balcones Whiskey Barrel Aged Montmorency vs. Balaton, a 9 percent ABV sour ale conditioned on two types of cherries— Montmorency and Balatonare—and aged for seven months in oak barrels that previously held Texas-based Balcones Distillery Baby Blue Whiskey. As the name indicates, the new variant uses the Austin-based brewery’s 2019 Montmorency vs. Balaton as its a base, a beer that was first released in March 2014.

Jester King has packaged several of its creations in 330ml bottles through the years, a list that includes Calvados Barrel Aurelian Lure, a 6.4 percent ABV sour beer refermented with apricots and aged in two 225-liter calvados apple brandy barrels sourced from the Normandy region of France; Sherry Barrel Atrial Rubicite, a 7 percent ABV sour beer refermented on raspberries and aged in a single 500l Spanish sherry barrel for 15 months that was released in Sept. 2015 and Gin Barrel Nocturn Chrysalis, a 7.4 percent ABV sour beer that incorporated the Nocturn Chrysalis (5.7 percent ABV) as a base before aging it in gin barrels sourced from Revolution Spirits Distilling Co. in Austin for a total of 10 months.

According to a post on Jester King Brewery’s Facebook page, Balcones Whiskey Barrel Aged Montmorency vs. Balaton will be packaged in 330ml bottles ($14) and will have a three bottle per person limit with 1,128 bottles available when it goes on sale on Nov.8.
