The first collaboration between Jester King Brewery and Dexter, Mich.-based Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales is out of this world.
The resulting beer is Space Waves, a 5.6 percent ABV farmhouse ale brewed with lime salt before being blended with Jester King’s Montmorency vs. Balaton (6.7 percent ABV) at a ratio of approximately 12:1. The ale was brewed at the Austin-based Jester King on April 14 and was packaged on May 31 to ferment in bottles for another two months until the release this weekend.
“Space Waves is an ode to the pioneering nature of Jolly Pumpkin, its ethereal approach to brewing, and its founder Ron Jeffries,” said Jeffery Stuffings, Jester King founder, in a post on the brewery’s Facebook page. “I think the label art for the beer by Josh Cockrell captures this sentiment. Our own “Captain Spooky” — Garrett Crowell — helped create the recipe. We took some of Ron Jeffries’ favorite flavors – bitter and salty — and combined them with the character we get from refermented Michigan cherries in our Montmorency vs. Balaton.”
According to the post on Jester King’s Facebook page, Space Waves will be packaged in 750ml bottles ($14) and will have a four bottle per person limit when it goes on sale at the brewery on Aug. 5. Approximately 3,000 bottles will be available, and it will not see distribution other than some bottles sent to Jolly Pumpkin and special events.
In addition, Stuffings told Tenemu earlier this year that although the first version of the beer was brewed at Jester King, there are plans to eventually brew the beer at Jolly Pumpkin as well.
