After recalling the first bottled release of Barrel Aged Christmas Ale in Nov. 2015, Great Lakes Brewing Co. is trying again.
The newest incarnation of the beer is an ale brewed with honey and spiced before being aged in bourbon barrels. The ale uses the Cleveland-based brewery’s Christmas Ale (7.5 percent ABV) as its base and was first released on-draft in 2014.
Last year, Great Lakes Brewing Co. released Barrel Aged Christmas Ale for the first time in bottles, but recalled all bottles that were sold due to unexpected “sour notes” that became part of the flavor profile. While bottles of the beer were sold through the brewery for a short time, none of the bottles were released to distribution.
According to a label filed with the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB), the 2016 version of Barrel Aged Christmas Ale will be packaged in 22-ounce bottles. An email sent to the brewery for additional information was not immediately returned.
