Next month, Funky Buddha Brewery will be releasing the final addition to its newest series of beers this year, a new ale “inspired by the classic Puerto Rican holiday drink.”

Coquito is an 10.3 percent ABV imperial cream ale brewed with cinnamon, coconut, lactose sugar, vanilla, and aged inside of Caribbean rum barrels. The profile of the new beer was inspired by the traditional coconut-based Christmas beverage of the same name that originated in Puerto Rico.

The beers in this year’s Mixology series that “recreates classic cocktails by using alternate fermentables, natural ingredients, and barrel-aging techniques” include:

  • Manhattan Double Rye Ale — a blend of whiskey barrel-aged double rye ale and wine barrel-aged Belgian ale with herbs and botanicals
  • Margarita Gose — a tequila barrel-aged gose with agave nectar, lime juice and sea salt
  • White Sangria — a chardonnay barrel-aged saison with grape must, apples and peaches
  • Coquito — imperial cream ale brewed with cinnamon, coconut, lactose sugar, vanilla, and aged inside of Caribbean rum barrels

According to the Funky Buddha’s website, Coquito will be packaged in four-packs of 12-ounce bottles ($14.99) and is scheduled to begin shipping to retailers across the brewery’s distribution network in October.
