A beer that debuted as part of Founders Brewing Co.’s Barrel-Aged Series last year is returning in September.

Underground Mountain Brown is an 11.9 percent ABV imperial brown ale brewed with “earthy” Sumatra coffee before being aged in bourbon barrels for one year. The ale made its first appearance under its current moniker last August, but that version came in at a slightly lower 11.6 percent ABV and was also available in 750ml bottles.

As the name indicates, the base beer is the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based brewery’s Sumatra Brown Ale, a 9 percent ABV imperial brown ale brewed with Sumatra coffee that is available packaged in four-packs of 12-ounce bottles. In addition, this is the same beer that was previously known as Barrel-Aged Sumatra Mountain Brown, an ale that debuted in 2012.

According to a post on Founders’ website, Underground Mountain Brown Ale 2020 will be packaged in both four-packs of 12-ounce bottles that are scheduled to be released at both of the brewery’s taprooms beginning on Sept. 2 and will “available everywhere else later that month” except for the state of Mississippi.
