Founders Brewing Co. is shipping not one, but two different Barrel-Aged Series releases this month.
According to a press release, the second beer in the series will be Backwoods Bastard, an 11 percent ABV scotch ale aged in bourbon barrels that was first released in 2007. The former member of the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based brewery’s Backstage Series was added to Founders’ year-round lineup for 2018, but still holds a spot in the Barrel-Aged Series. The newest incarnation of Backwoods Bastard will be packaged exclusively in four-packs of 12-ounce bottles ($14.99) that will begin shipping to retailers this month.
In addition, Founders is adding Dankwood as the third release in the Barrel-Aged Series, an imperial red IPA brewed with caramalt and roasted barley as well as chinook, Mosaic and Simcoe hops before being aged in bourbon barrels. The IPA is the same beer as Founders’ reDANKulous IPA and will be packaged in four-packs of 12-ounce bottles ($14.99) and 750ml bottles (11.95) that are shipping to retailers across the brewery’s 46-state distribution network this month.
We now know four of the six beers that make up Founders’ Barrel-Aged Series:
- Kentucky Breakfast Stout — March
- Backwoods Bastard — April
- Dankwood — May
- Barrel Runner — June
- Unannounced Beer — September
- Unannounced Beer — November
“Backwoods Bastard and Dankwood show the spectrum of our barrel-aged program,” said Jeremy Kosmicki, brewmaster at Founders, in a press release. “We started experimenting with barrel-aging over a decade ago and keep adding more to keep up with demand. Backwoods Bastard has earned its rightful spot as the only year-round in the line-up, while Dankwood is an example of the extreme creative demands we place on ourselves to keep this all going. Where many stick only with one or two styles of beer, we always pursue experimentation and give into our curiosity.”
