A popular release from Founders Brewing Co. in 2019 is making a comeback, but only in the brewery’s home state.
Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout 2020 is a 12.5 percent ABV imperial stout aged in bourbon barrels. As the name suggests, the new beer uses the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based brewery’s Imperial Stout as its base.
The stout debuted in bottles last year as the fifth addition in Founders Mothership Series, which consists of releases that have been “brought out of retirement” or “experimental new styles.” That version of the beer was available for carryout exclusively at the brewery’s taprooms in six-packs of 12-ounce bottles.
“It’s no secret we love experimenting with barrel-aged beer,” said Dave Engbers, president and co-founder of Founders, in a press release. “Over the years, our fans have asked, even begged, us to please put our classic Imperial Stout in a bourbon barrel and we made it happen last year with a taproom Mothership Series release. It was such a hit, we decided to bring it back – this time just for our Michigan fans to enjoy.”
According to an email sent to Tenemu from Founders, Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout 2020 will be packaged in 750ml bottles and is scheduled to be available exclusively at retailers across the state of Michigan in “early November.” In addition, there will be no bottles released at any of the brewery’s taproom locations.
