Founders Brewing Co.’s final Backstage Series release this year was first brewed for a very special occasion.
The beer is Lizard of Koz, an imperial stout brewed with blueberries, chocolate and vanilla before being aged in bourbon barrels. The stout was first brewed by brewmaster Jeremy Kosmicki as a birthday present for his sister and her husband, who also works at the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based brewery, and has been a draft-only option since then.
“Lizard of Koz represents everything we love about the Backstage Series,” said Dave Engbers, co-founder and president of Founders, in a press release. “Inspired, creative, a little bit out there and exploding with flavor. The perfect way to cap off 2016.”
The Backstage Series consists of “boundary-pushing, experimental beers” that (are) meant to “take the diehard Founders fan experience to a wider audience.” Lizard of Koz will be the second and final beer released in the series this year, after Mango Magnifico con Calor, a 10 percent ABV fruit ale brewed with both mangos and habaneros was released for the second time in March.
According to an email sent to Tenemu and press release, Lizard of Koz will be packaged in 750ml bottles ($18.99) and is scheduled to be released during an event at the brewery on Nov. 18, followed up by distribution in “limited quantities” across Founders’ 39-state distribution network “through mid-December.”
