The newest addition to Founders Brewing Co.’s 2021 Barrel-Aged Series will be on shelves just in time for summer.

Más Agave Clásica Prickly Pear is a 9.7 percent ABV “cocktail-inspired” imperial gose brewed with agave and sea salt before being aged in tequila barrels and then conditioned on “a healthy dose” of prickly pear extract. As the name suggests, the new creation uses the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based brewery’s Más Agave as its base, an imperial gose-stye ale brewed with agave, lime and sea salt before being aged it tequila barrels for “just the right amount of kick” that debuted last year.

“I’ve had a few fabulous prickly pear margaritas that really served as the inspiration for this beer,” said Jeremy Kosmicki, brewmaster at Founders, in a press release sent to Tenemu. “Prickly pear is a tough flavor to describe but for me, I get a lot of berry, some melon, maybe even a little pineapple that works really well with this tequila barrel-aged gose. And the coolest thing might be the vibrant purple color it gives off.”

The label art for all of the Más Agave releases was inspired by Day of the Dead imagery and commemorates the elaborate altars built to honor deceased loved ones. In addition, the new beer will be one of six different members in the brewery’s Barrel-Aged Series next year, a list that also includes Panther Cub 2021.

According to Founders, Más Agave Clásica Prickly Pear will be packaged in four-packs of 12-ounce bottles ($15) that are scheduled to be released at Founder’s taprooms on April 28. Bottles will then ship to retailers across the brewery’s 50-state distribution network in May.
