The fifth release in Founders Brewing Co.’s Barrel-Aged Series for 2017 is not a surprise, but now we have a bit more information.

Backwoods Bastard 2017 is an 11.2 percent ABV scotch ale that has been aged in bourbon barrels. It was first released in 2007 and has been a member of the Grand Rapid, Mich.-based brewery’s Backstage Series before that series was changed to the Barrel-Aged Series this year.

“Expect lovely, warm smells of single malt scotch, oaky bourbon barrels, smoke, sweet caramel and roasted malts,” reads a label filed with the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB.) “A bit of earthy spice and a scintilla of dark fruit. It’s a kick-back sipper made to excite the palate.”

Backwoods Bastard will join five other beers being released at part of Founders’ Barrel-Aged Series this year:

According to Founders, the newest incarnation of Backwoods Bastard will be packaged in both 750ml bottles as well as four-packs of 12-ounce bottles and is expected to begin shipping to retailers in October.
