A new version of Firestone Walker Brewing Co.’s Velvet Merlin is shipping to retailers this week.
The beer is Mocha Merlin, a 5.5 percent ABV oatmeal stout brewed with lactose, cocoa nibs from Ghana and Colombia La Granadilla coffee blend from HoneyCo Coffee Roasters, which is added straight into the fermentation tank, similar to the process used for dry-hopping. According to the Paso Robles, Calif.-based brewery, this new stout uses the milk stout version of the original Velvet Merlin recipe.
“This is an iteration of Velvet Merlin that we’ve dabbled in before, and we finally decided to scale it up,” said Matt Brynildson, brewmaster at Firestone Walker, in a press release. “The inclusion of milk sugar adds dimension to the mouthfeel and helps knit the coffee and cocoa qualities together on the palate. It takes Merlin to another level and it’s a perfect sipper for the season.”
Mocha Merlin is packaged in six-packs of 12-ounce cans and is shipping to retailers across Firestone Walker’s distribution network this week.
