What do you get when you cross a mermaid and a bear?
The answer is MerBear, two new collaborations between Coronado Brewing Co. and Bear Republic Brewing Co. Both breweries will be releasing a different version of the new beer within their own respective distribution networks.
According to Heather Dueitt, marketing manager at Coronado, the Coronado, Calif.-based brewery’s version of the rye IPA comes in at 7.5 percent ABV and is brewed with Amarillo, centennial, Equinox and hallertau blanc hops as well as 2-row, wheat and biscuit malts. The beer was brewed at Coronado on Jan. 12 and is packaged in 22-ounce bottles and will be shipped to retailers in the brewery’s distribution footprint starting next week.
“We have always respected the team and loved drinking their beers,” said Brandon Richards, vp of sales and marketing at Coronado Brewing, in a press release. “We’ve built a solid relationship with Bear Republic and enjoy working with each other any chance we get. This is something I can see developing into more collaborations in the future.”
Bear Republic’s version of MerBear also comes in at 7.5 percent ABV, but incorporates Azacca, Buddha’s hand, El Dorado, Ella, Equinox, and super galena hops. Although distribution for Cloverdale, Calif.-based brewery’s version is still being finalized, it will also be packaged in 22-ounce bottles and is scheduled to be available this month.
