A popular Clown Shoes Beer exclusive release for the state of Minnesota is returning next month.

According to Bryan Doran, regional sales manager at Clown Shoes, Loonidragon 2018 is a Russian imperial stout brewed with coconut “natural flavoring” and aged in a mix of  bourbon barrels sourced from “higher end brands” for approximately two months.

“We have been aging this one for about two months,” said Doran, in an email with Tenemu. “We are finding the pick up of spirit flavors really happens in the first month and if we pull it before about three months, we don’t get the oak barrel flavors we do not want.”

This will be the fourth release of Loonidragon:

  • Loonidragon 2014 (14.5 ABV) — Russian imperial stout aged in bourbon barrels
  • Loonidragon 2016 (13 ABV) — Russian imperial stout aged in Scotch barrels
  • Loonidragon 2017 (13 ABV) — Russian imperial stout aged in rum barrels
  • Loonidragon 2018 (12.25 ABV) — Russian imperial stout aged in bourbon barrels

Loonidragon 2018 will be packaged in 22-ounce bottles that are scheduled to be available exclusively at retailers in the state of Minnesota at the “beginning of May.”

Update (April 24, 2018) — This post was updated to include details on the release, distribution and brewing information. It was originally published on April 20, 2018.
