A new beer from Boulevard Brewing Co. takes the funk to a new level.
According to Jeremy Danner, ambassador brewer for Boulevard, the Kansas City, Mo.-based brewery will be releasing Funkier Pumpkin, an 8.5 percent ABV “spiced sour ale with brettanoyces” that is brewed with pumpkin, amber 50, Munich and pale malts as well as Magnum and Zeus hops before being spiced with allspice, cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg. The new addition uses Boulevard’s Funky Pumpkin (5.8 percent ABV) as its base beer, which was originally released last year.
“The beer is inspired by Funky Pumpkin, but is a bit higher ABV (8.5) and will see a longer time with brettanomyces than Funky Pumpkin to bright out more of that funky/earthy character,” said Danner in an email. “The malt bill and spicing are essentially the same, just in a bigger beer.”
Funkier Pumpkin will be the 15th release in Boulevard’s Smokestack Series, which includes both limited releases and year-round beers packaged in both 750ml bottles and 12-ounce bottles.
According to a post on Boulevard’s website, Funkier Pumpkin will be packaged in 750ml bottles and is scheduled to ship to retailers in Kansas City, Mo. on Aug. 9, while the rest of the brewery’s distribution network should see the beer “in the coming weeks.”
