Next week, Boulevard Brewing Co. will be releasing its final addition to this year’s First Fridays Collection Series.
Your Popsicle Melted is an 7,4 percent ABV blend of sour a Belgian golden strong ale and “a couple” of saisons that were aged in French oak wine barrels and Sangiovese puncheons respectively with the brewery’s house lactobacillus and brettanomyces cultures. The ale was then conditioned on 6,000 pounds of Michigan-grown Balaton cherries for four months in Boulevard’s original oak foeder.

“I’ve come across a few Balaton cherry beers in the past, and have always been interested in making one here at Boulevard,” said Ryan McNeive, lead brewer of Boulevard’s barrel-aging program, in a post on the brewery’s website. “Side Project’s Balaton has always inspired me, along with Sun King and a few other breweries that have used this specific cherry. It makes a very interesting flavor when used at a higher ABV.”
This is the newest release in Boulevard’s First Fridays Collection Series, which is “a series of exceptional beers at the intersection of experimental art and established science, a curation of cutting edge, artisanal, barrel-fermented and wood-aged ales.” Previous additions to the series include Hold the Pancakes, a 14.1 percent ABV ale made up of a blend of multiple vintages of imperial brown ales as well as imperial stouts that have been aged in both rye and whiskey barrels for up to two years with maple syrup before being packaged in 750ml bottles; and Lickable Wallpaper, an 8.1 percent ABV mixed-fermentation saison brewed with aged Saaz hops before being aged in Chardonnay wine casks source “from a world-class winery in Napa Valley” for 14 months and conditioned on fresh Washington boysenberries for an additional four months.
According to Boulevard, Your Popsicle Melted is packaged in 750ml bottles that are scheduled to be released at the brewery on Nov.11 and shipped in limited quantities across the brewery’s distribution network starting next week.
