A new beer from Boulevard Brewing Co. is taking barrel aging to a brand new level.
Rye on Rye on Rye on Rye is a 15.5 percent ABV rye ale that has been aged in three different rye barrels for various lengths of time:
- First aging — 10-year barrels that previously held Canadian rye whiskey for one year
- Second aging — barrels that previously held Templeton rye whiskey for six months
- Third aging — barrels that previously held Woodford rye whiskey for six months
As the name suggests, the base beer for the new release is the Kansas City, Mo.-based brewery’s Rye on Rye, a 12 percent ABV ale brewed with German rye, English crystal rye, Cara 50 and Munich malt, brown sugar, dark brown sugar and dark candi syrup as well as Citra, Magnum and Styrian Golding hops. Boulevard has released a number of variants of the base beer over the years, including Rye-on-Rye “X” Sazerac Cocktail (11 percent ABV) and Rye On Rye On Rye (14.5 percent ABV.)
Rye on Rye on Rye on Rye is the third release to Boulevard’s Brewhouse One Series, which is made up of beers released exclusively at the brewery. Past additions to the series have included Requiem for a Pancake (13.3 percent ABV) and One Love (14.6 percent ABV), both of which were released last year.
According to a post on Boulevard’s website, Rye on Rye on Rye on Rye will be packaged in 12-ounce bottles ($12) and will have a purchase limit of four bottles per person during a ticketed event at the Boulevard Tours & Rec Center on March 11. Remaining bottles will then be released to the public exclusively at the brewery’s gift shop on March 12 with a purchase limit of four bottles per person.
In addition, for every bottle sold, Boulevard will donate $1 to Rose Brooks Center which works to “break the cycle of domestic violence so that adults, children, and their pets can live free of abuse.”
