It is not often that The Alchemist releases a new beer in cans, but today is one of those days.
The beer being released is Hellbrook, a 7 percent ABV American red ale brewed exclusively with Cascade hops. It was first released at a slightly higher 8 percent ABV by the Waterbury, Vt.-based brewery as a draft-only option in 2010, but this is the first time it has been packaged.
“This was originally conceived as an imperial red ale, 8 percent and hopped like a double IPA,” said John Kimmich, co-owner and head brewer of The Alchemist, in a video posted on the brewery’s Facebook page. “What I wanted to do was kinda bring a very traditional hop, which is Cascade—just such a beautiful, delicate hop—and I wanted to bring that to the forefront but keep the bitterness in check.”
According to The Alchemist’s website, Hellbrook is packaged in four-packs of 16-ounce cans ($12.50) and will have a limit of six four-packs when it is released at the brewery starting today for a period of two weeks.
