Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy
If you're the type that tends to judge a book by its cover, then seeing the word "big" scrawled not once, but twice, in not so little letters across the face of a big bottle is probably going to have you thinking big. At least that's the impression I get when taking in the text and graphics found on the label of a bottle of Big Sound Scotch Ale from Cigar City Brewing of Tampa, Fla.
Today I’m reviewing a beer that seems to be having an identity crisis. The brewery’s name and beer names are in French, with a beer style from Scotland, using some ingredients from Canada. It would probably make more sense if I told you that the brewery was based in Quebec though, so let’s start over.
Relatively new to the craft brewing scene, No Label Brewing established themselves in Katy, Texas in 2010. Founded by a beer enthusiastic family, Brian Royo, his wife Jennifer, and his parents Gilberto and Melanie all left their respective careers that didn’t have anything to do with beer to pursue the dream of having their own brewery. One of the brewery's projects is called the Off Label Brew Series, which includes experimental beers that didn’t quite fit in the rest of their lineup.
