Saint Arnold Brewing’s newest entry in the Bishop Barrel series is a barrel-aged version of one of its most popular beers.

Coming in between 10 and 11 percent ABV, Bishop Barrel 11—known internally as Gindeavour —is a double IPA aged in gin barrels for four months. The base beer is Saint Arnold’s Endeavour IPA (8.9 percent ABV), which is brewed with 2-row and caramel malts as well as Columbus, simcoe and centennial hops. According to the brewery, the final beer is a blend of 80 percent gin-barrel aged Endeavour and 20 percent fresh Endeavour.

A post on Saint Arnold’s website has more background on the beer:

It started when someone brought us a bottle of barrel aged gin. Brewer Aaron tasted it, thought, “Hmmm, that might be an interesting accompaniment to Endeavour.” A couple of drops of it were added to a pint and the results were promising. Next came the challenge of finding gin barrels. There aren’t a lot of barrel aged gins out there. Luckily we had visited a small distillery in West Virginia, Smooth Ambler, that barrel aged a gin in used bourbon barrels. After much work, we secured 30 of these used gin barrels.

To date, there have been 10 previous Bishop’s Barrel releases:

  • Saint Arnold Bishop’s Barrel 1 (12 percent ABV), a bourbon barrel imperial stout;
  • Saint Arnold Bishop’s Barrel 2 (7.8 percent ABV), an old ale aged in chardonnay barrels with cherries;
