After about 20 years of calling Grand Rapids, Mich. its sole home, Founders Brewing Co. announced plans this morning to expand to a second location in Detroit.

The city of Detroit and Founders have a lot in common – we hit rock bottom and we bounced right back. It took years of hard work, tenacity and a regret nothing attitude, but we did it and we see those struggles reflected in the struggles and ultimate triumph of Detroit. And the people that live there? Tough-as-nails, industrious, culturally diverse, passionate and incredibly vocal about their love for Founders. This taproom is for them.

The new location is 456 Charlotte St. in the lower Cass Corridor neighborhood in Midtown, in close proximity to major sports arenas, music venues and the Detroit Masonic Temple.

The 14,000-square-foot facility will feature both a taproom and a second brewery, expected to create new beers unique to that location.

Construction is expected to start this summer and an opening is targeted for winter 2017.
