If you're the type that tends to judge a book by its cover, then seeing the word "big" scrawled not once, but twice, in not so little letters across the face of a big bottle is probably going to have you thinking big. At least that's the impression I get when taking in the text and graphics found on the label of a bottle of Big Sound Scotch Ale from Cigar City Brewing of Tampa, Fla.
There are not many Cucumber beers on the market these days,[ref]The Twisted Pine Cucumber Cream Ale that I reviewed last year is just one of them.[/ref] but in 2011, Cigar City released one for the first time as a summer seasonal.
Gather round friends, and let me tell you the tale of that great whale[ref]In this particular instance, I am calling the beer a whale due to the hype that surrounds it, not as an indication of its rarity.[/ref] of a beer, Hunahpu’s Imperial Stout.
In a sea full of pumpkin beers it is certainly hard to stick out from the crowd. It seems like every brewer does some sort of pumpkin beer come fall and we are currently right in the thick of those beers dropping. With every trend though there are outliers, both the good, the bad and the please don’t ever brew that beer again. Good Gourd by Cigar City brewing is without a doubt in the good category. Originally released in 2009 it was solely available on draft for the first two years of production. Then from 2011-2013 it was made available in 750ml bottles and this past year it was bottled in 22-ounce bottles. Since its initial release Good Gourd has become a highly anticipated seasonal staple.
